Reichert Meets With U.S. Attorney Over City Fraud Charges |
|
Macon Mayor Robert Reichert met Tuesday afternoon with U.S. Attorney Max
Wood concerning the federal government's fraud claim against the city.
Federal officials say some of the $900,000 in education grant money given to the city in 2002 has not been accounted for. The government wants $350,000 of the money back and is may seek additional penalty monies. Following his meeting with Wood, Reichert told reporters that wouldn't make any detailed comments on the meeting until he first reported back to City Council. Even then, Reichert admitted, he may not be able to completely discuss the conversation in depth. The alleged misuse of funds took place when C. Jack Ellis was mayor. Ellis has commented on the issue saying his administration did nothing wrong. The grant money was earmarked to be spent on anti-crime youth programs, in particular after-school. |
