Mayor Warns Council: Privatize Trash Pickup Or Face Layoffs |
|
Macon Mayor Robert Reichert Tuesday told members of City Council that
failure to privatize refuse pickup in the city would lead to massive
layoffs or massive tax increases to make up for lost revenue.
Reichert included the outsourcing of trash pickup to an independent contractor as part of his 2009 city budget. Meeting Tuesday with officials from WastePro, Reichert said the city would get a windfall of over $2-million dollars from the sale of city trucks and equipment as well as money in tipping fees and office space rentals. Most council members, however, remain skeptical of the plan and want to see alternative solutions. But the Mayor contends there are few other options available and that ""Every 'Plan B' that I could come up with is less attractive than this...". The 2009 fiscal year begins on July 1. |
