1 Dead In Atlanta Small Plane Crash

One person died when a small plane crashed Tuesday afternoon near Interstate 285 just north of Atlanta, authorities said.

The Piper Saratoga PA-32 had just taken off from DeKalb Peachtree Airport when it went down in a neighborhood about 2 p.m., Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said. Bergen said the plane was headed to Coldwater, Mich.

Officials did not release the victim's identity. DeKalb County fire spokesman Capt. Eric Jackson said the victim was the only person in the airplane and no one on the ground was hurt in the accident.

An autopsy likely will be performed Wednesday.

The plane crashed about 20 feet from the front door of a home and barely missed two other houses, Jackson said.

Officials are unsure what caused the accident, but the plane appeared to clip trees as it went down.

The plane is registered to Women's Medicine Inc. of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., according to FAA records. The pilot did not register a flight plan before taking off Tuesday, which would have included more details about the purpose of the flight and its intended route, Bergen said.

Officials with Women's Medicine Inc. did not immediately return calls for comment.
