Queensland authorities are reviewing whether to reclassify dingoes as Canis familiaris, which would permit keeping them as pets. Dingoes currently face classification as invasive species, prohibiting their sale, feeding, or ownership. “Dingoes will continue to be protected in national parks and landholders will still be able to take action to protect their livestock from wild dog or dingo attacks under the general biosecurity obligation,” a department rep said. Wildlife experts oppose the proposal. “Dingoes are not dogs,” wrote Alix Livingstone of Defend the Wild, calling them “a genetically, evolutionarily, and behaviorally distinct species.” Genetics researcher Kylie Cairns warns dingoes “don’t do as well in home environments as domestic dogs” and are “much better able to escape traditional domestic household home environments.” (Story URL)
